Caryl Phillips was born in St Kitts in 1958, grew up in the North of England and now lives in New York. He began his literary career as a playwright, and is now mainly known as an essayist and a novelist. He has won many awards for his writing, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for Crossing the River, in 1993) and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize (for A Distant Shore, in 2004). His latest novel is In the Falling Snow (2009), and his new collection of essays, Colour Me English, was released in 2011.
